Later, after giving Emma a hopeful goodbye and reassuring her we were working on a plan, I met Caleb outside the church with Brandon and Gran in tow. I was beginning to feel like a celebrity or something with an entourage following me around all the time, but I needed both of them to help me with what we were about to do.

Pink and purple hues from the sunset bathed the stone building in bright colors. Long shadows stretched across the street warning of the darkness to come with the night. Cars passed by periodically, and a few people came and went while walking on the sidewalk.

“I really wish I could go in there with you. It doesn’t seem right to stand out here while you’re in there battling.” Caleb frowned as we stood side-by-side in front of the gate and stared up at the formidable church.

“I’m sure it would be good to have the added protection, so that’s why I invited another person to come along this time. Necromancers can enter churches, right?” I shot him a teasing grin.

“Say what?”

And right on cue, Noah drove up and parked his car across the street.

Scowling, Caleb turned around and watched my friend walk toward us. “You invited him?”

“I didn’t want to, trust me,” I said with a low voice, hoping Noah wouldn’t hear. “But he’s the only other alive person I could think of who could be helpful doing a weird task for a weird group of not-humans.”

“Now we’re a real party,” Brandon muttered and shook his head. “But I can’t argue that having someone who could help you in the physical world isn’t a bad idea. Especially after last time.”

“What happened last time?” Gran’s eyebrows rose in concern.

“We’ll have to tell you later,” Brandon said with an apologetic smile my way.

“Hey, guys. Wow, nice place,” Noah said as he jogged across the street.

“I’m only tolerating your presence because I can’t go in there myself,” Caleb nearly growled.

Noah grinned. “Right. That’s why.”

Caleb scowled, and I stepped in between the two. “Alright, yes, we get it. You guys don’t like each other. Fine. Let’s focus on the task here. There’s a ghost inside that we need to at least calm down. Ideally, it would be great to have a long chat with her and find out more about Dion for the vampires, but this is going to take time.”

“Time we don’t have. The queen is right on the edge. I don’t know what she’ll do next, but, if we don’t get answers soon, she’ll do something, and it won’t be pretty.” Caleb’s eyebrows moved together in worry, and the confidence he usually had disappeared as he talked about his queen.

It was slightly unnerving.

“I know. I’m sorry. All I can say is we’re doing the best we can. I’ve brought Gran along with me this time so she can help me do a better job.”

Caleb pressed his lips together but didn’t say anything else.

“Noah, I’m sorry to invite you here after I’ve been avoiding you, but you’re the only one I could think of who could help.
